Overview
Sodium Metasilicate (Na2SiO3) is one of the silicate compounds that can dissolve in water. Mestasilicate Sodium is made by reacting Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) and Silica Sand (SiO2) in a furnace. The use of Sodium Metasilicate (Na2SiO3) in the chemical industry can be said to be quite extensive. Some of the uses of Sodium Metasilicate (Na2SiO3) include the manufacture of silica gel, catalysts, metal cleaners and various other chemical industries. Sodium Metasilicate (Na2SiO3) is a white solid with a molecular weight of 122.06, a melting point of 1088°C and a density of 2.4 g/cm3.
Manufacturing Process
Sodium metal is produced commercially by two processes; Downs process: In downs process, fused sodium chloride undergoes electrolysis and leads to the formation of Sodium metal at cathode. Castners Process similarly involves electrolysis of Sodium hydroxide instead of Sodium chloride. But due to formation of water in the process, it undergoes reverse reaction with sodium and thus decreasing the efficiency of the process. Downs process is commercially more viable than Castners process as it uses less electricity and efficiently produces more Sodium.
Applications
Heat Transfer
Molten sodium has heat transfer capacity. Liq, Sodium is sealed into the pipes surrounding the nuclear reactor. Heat generated is absorbed by Sodium which can be used to generate electricity. It is also used as a coolant in fast breeder reactors. It also partially filled in poppet valves of combustion engines to cool the valves.
Chemical Synthesis
In chemical synthesis, many of sodium metal reactions are on the surface hence it used as a reagent. It reduces various alcohols, aromatic compounds, alkynes etc. It is used in the manufacture of sodium cyanide, potassium metal, titanium sponge, sodium peroxide and various chemicals. Sodium borohydride, sodium azide, sodium amide etc are also manufactured by using metallic sodium. It is also used to dry solvents by mixing with benzophenone.
Pharmaceutical
